The Early Dunster project began in June 2018 with a grant from HE, to look at the early building fabric of Dunster. The aim of the project is to interpret the early phases of each building to gain a better understanding of the early town. This is based on structural surveys of the buildings. The surveys are complemented by photographs, research into documentation, including probate records, earlier publications and the SANHS Proceedings. Some of these buildings have been proved through dendrochronology to be remarkably early.
As well as working with Historic England, the team work closely with Dunster Museum, local organisations such as the local archaeology group and individuals who have personal stories to tell about Dunster. The DBG Summer Conference will be looking at the research and buildings in Dunster that the project has uncovered. The DBG Summer Conference will begin with our customary coffee and cakes, followed by a series of short lectures. The afternoon will start with an in situ talk on the Old Kiln.
